seems that i can't add tabbed panel to the central content area. or did i miss anything?

The main content area doesn't have tabbed panels (like those in dock panels) by default. But you can add other tab controls, like the TabContainer control that comes with MS AjaxControlToolkit, into it. We think that it will be more flexible this way.
